The University Synchronized Swimming League’s National Championships were held this past weekend at the University of Toronto and we are very pleased to inform you that the University of Calgary Synchro Team are the 2009 National Champions in both team and solo events! Out of 15 teams, representing 16 universities from across the country, the U of C team finished in first place after preliminaries and were able to maintain their ranking through finals.
With a final score of 77.333, U of C beat the defending National Champions, McGill University, who had a score of 75.667. Queens, who were champions in our club’s inaugural year (2007), placed third with a final score of 75.000. This victory marks the first time in the history of the Canadian University Synchronized Swimming League that a team from the west has been crowned as champion.
In addition, Kerry Atkins secured the gold medal for the University of Calgary in the solo event after defeating 10 other swimmers from across the country. With these two first place finishes, the University of Calgary placed 2nd overall in team aggregate, behind McGill, who competed in a number of additional categories, including novice.
The league’s website (www.universitysynchro.ca) will also be updated shortly to include a full breakdown of these results, as well as our team being featured on the main page as the National Champions!
Thanks to all who have supported and contributed to the U of C Synchro teams success.
